Music For Life!!!

Preston Girls Secondary College has an exciting and vibrant music program. Instrumental music program is a big part of our school life. We offer a wide range of musical instruments. These instruments include guitar, bass guitar, classical guitar, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, drum and voice.

Our instrumental music teachers come to the school on particular days of the week and offer lessons and group tuition to our students during class time. These lessons run on a rotating timetable.

The College has a strong history of performing. There are several concerts as well as a variety of performances within the school community throughout the year, in particular the annual winter concert and the Performing Arts Festival on the last day of term three.

Music students participate in ensembles which rehearse and perform throughout the year, including Guitar Ensembles, String Ensembles, Woodwind Ensembles, Percussion Ensembles, Rock / Pop Bands and the Choirs.
Classroom music program is offered from Years 7–12. It is a core subject in Years 7 and 8. At these levels, the program caters both for students who have not previously learned music as well as students with a musical background, with a focus on music appreciation as well as theory and aural training. Students learn to communicate and understand musical language through performance, listening and evaluating music. They gain awareness of issues of music in culture, and learn appropriate responses to musical elements.

Music For Life and Music Craft are elective subjects in Years 9 and 10. Students who might be considering taking music subjects in VCE are catered for in these electives. Here they gain a solid grounding in theory, aural training, composition, and musical analysis.
